Quizzes from our MOOC: DNA from structure to therapy

Mitosis is a crucial process in which cells divide into two daughter cells containing identical genetic information. It is crucial to cellular functionality and disease prevention that all genetic material is ditributed equally to the two daughter cells. Besides that however, it also is a process that is fascinating to watch or to capture in stained images.

DNA vocabulary Quiz

There is a lot of vocabulary or new names, terms and chemical differentiations that sounds similar or is confusing at first when talking about DNA. Also, some of the these, might be explicitly explained only in 1 unit. So, take the quiz to practise, refresh your memory and test yourself.

4 types of nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA. They belong to either the purine or pyrimidine family of bases. Due to their structure, bonds are only formed between the correct pairs. Can you name them correctly and sort them into the correct groups ? This quiz will help you to refresh your memory and to memorize the names and groups.

Replication Quiz

Replication is an important process as the cell has to make sure that the genomic information is correctly copied. Errors in replication cause mutations which might lead to disease if they hit a nucleotide in a coding or regulating region. Replication takes place in S phase of the cell cycle and after G2 phase the duplicated material is distributed to the two daughter cells during mitosis.

Transcription, according to the central dogma of molecular biology formulated by Francis Crick in 1958, is the intermediate step in the information processing from DNA to protein. It is a crucial step in synthesis but also a process that contributes to regulation of gene expression and is a target for new therapeutic strategies, especially when targeting bacteria resistant to existing antibiotics.

Translation Quiz

Translation is the process of translating an mRNA sequence into an animo acid sequence of a protein or peptide using the ribosome as the "protein factory". Translation takes place in the cytoplasm and is tightely regulated. Some new therapeutic strategies, like amnioglykoside readthrough target translation to ameliorate diseases bases on genetic defects like pre-mature stop codons.
